## Tree Surgery explained, what it is and when you need it
Tree surgery is the skilled care of standing trees. Instead of taking a tree down, we work on it to change how it grows: reducing its height and spread, lifting the lower crown, thinning dense growth, removing deadwood and shaping it so it suits the space it is in. Done properly, the tree looks natural afterwards and recovers well.

Most people call us when a tree has started to cause a problem: blocking light into the house, hanging over the roof, rubbing against gutters, spreading over a neighbour's garden or looking lopsided after years without attention. Surgery is often the answer that keeps the benefits of a mature tree while fixing the issue.

Professional help matters because every cut changes how a tree responds. Cuts in the wrong place or too many at once can lead to decay, weak regrowth and a tree that becomes more dangerous, not less. Our climbers are NPTC qualified for chainsaws, tree climbing and cherry pickers and City & Guilds trained in all aspects of tree work.

### Who this service is for

- Homeowners, who want more light, less overhang or a better-shaped tree without losing it altogether.
- Neighbours sharing a boundary, where branches spread over fences, drives or conservatories.
- Owners of mature and older trees, such as oaks, which customers regularly ask us to prune and maintain.
- Businesses and landlords, who need trees kept clear of buildings, paths and parking.
## What happens if it's left

### Heavy limbs keep getting heavier
A long, unmanaged limb adds weight every year. Eventually it can split away, often in the storm you least want it to.

### Damage to roofs, gutters and cables
Branches rubbing on a roof or filling gutters cause steady, expensive damage that is easily avoided with regular pruning.

### Bigger work, bigger cost later
Small, regular pruning is easier on the tree and your budget. Waiting years means larger cuts, more stress for the tree and a bigger job.

### Mistakes we see most often

- Topping a tree, cutting straight across the top, which causes weak, fast regrowth.
- Taking off too much of the crown in one go.
- Pruning a protected tree without checking for a TPO or conservation area first.
- Hiring someone uninsured to work at height near a house.
## How we do it, our five-step process

- Step 1

### Free site visit
We look at the tree's health, structure and surroundings and talk through what you want to change.

- Step 2

### Diagnosis and plan
We recommend the right work, whether that is a reduction, lift, thin, deadwood removal or pollard, and check protection status.

- Step 3

### Skilled climbing work
Our climbing team makes clean cuts in the right places while the ground crew lowers and clears.

- Step 4

### Check the result
We step back and check the shape and balance from the ground before leaving the tree.

- Step 5

### Clear-up
All branches and chippings are removed as part of the price, and the garden is left tidy.

## What you get out of it

### More light
Reductions and thinning bring light back into homes and gardens without losing the tree.

### Safety
Removing deadwood and heavy limbs reduces the risk of failure in storms.

### Longevity
Correct cuts help the tree seal wounds and grow on healthily for years.

### Cost savings
Keeping trees clear of roofs and gutters avoids repair bills.

### No hidden extras
Waste removal, wood and chippings are included in the price.

### Peace of mind
£10m public liability, 5.0 from 59 Google reviews and 10/10 on Checkatrade.

## Tree Surgery in detail

### Tree surgery techniques we use
Each technique solves a different problem. At the site visit we explain which one fits your tree and why.

- Crown reduction, reducing overall height and spread
- Crown lifting, removing lower branches to clear roofs, drives and paths
- Crown thinning, removing selected branches to let light and wind through
- Pollarding, cutting back to a framework for trees managed this way
- Deadwood removal, taking out dead and dying branches
- Shaping, bringing an uneven or overgrown tree back into proportion

### Timing and tree health
Many pruning jobs can be carried out at most times of year, but some species and situations are better handled in particular seasons. We also check for nesting birds before work goes ahead. At the site visit we explain whether timing matters for your tree.

Mature trees, especially oaks, benefit from a lighter touch spread over time rather than heavy one-off cuts. Our aim is always a tree that looks natural and grows back strongly.

### Residential and commercial trees
In gardens the focus is usually on light, space and keeping trees clear of the house. On commercial sites, schools and car parks, the priority is safety around people and vehicles, with work planned to cause as little disruption as possible.

### Keeping neighbours and property protected
Tree surgery often takes place close to houses, conservatories, greenhouses and neighbouring gardens. Our ground crew controls every branch that comes out of the crown, lowering heavier pieces on ropes rather than letting them drop. Where a tree overhangs a neighbour, we can talk to them about access and what will happen on the day, so there are no surprises. Work is covered by £10 million public liability insurance from the first cut to the final clean-up.

## Tree Surgery, your questions answered

### How much does tree surgery cost in Colchester?
It depends on the size of the tree, the work needed and access. The site visit and quote are free, and removal of all branches and chippings is included in the price.

### How long does tree surgery take?
Many single-tree jobs are completed within a day by our two or three person crew. We tell you the expected duration when we quote.

### Will my tree look butchered afterwards?
No. Our aim is a natural shape. We make correct cuts and avoid topping, which damages the tree and looks poor.

### Do I need permission to prune my tree?
Only if it has a TPO or is in a conservation area. We check before any work is agreed.

### How often should trees be pruned?
It depends on the species, growth rate and location. We give you honest advice on when the tree is likely to need attention again.

### Can you prune a tree that overhangs from next door?
You can usually cut back branches overhanging your boundary. We advise talking to your neighbour and checking protection status first.

### Are you qualified and insured?
Yes. NPTC qualified for chainsaws, climbing and MEWPs, City & Guilds trained, with £10 million public liability insurance.

### Can you come out urgently?
Yes. Our phones are 24/7 On the Line and we offer a same-day response for dangerous or damaged trees.
