Stump Grinding

Stump grinding across Essex and Suffolk — stumps ground to 300mm below ground, ready for turf or planting.

01 · Overview

Tree stump grinding in Essex & Suffolk

Stump grinding removes the remaining trunk and major roots below ground using a mechanical grinder. A rotating cutting disc chips away the wood layer by layer until the stump is gone and the area can be levelled, turfed or replanted.

We grind to 300mm below ground as standard — the depth most clients need for grass or new planting. Based in Colchester, we carry out stump grinding across Essex and Suffolk for gardens, drives and commercial sites. The machine we use depends on stump diameter and how tight the access is.

What is tree stump grinding?

The grinder works from the top of the stump down, breaking wood and root material into small chips. Unlike digging out a stump by hand, grinding is faster, causes less disruption to surrounding ground, and suits most residential plots.

Larger stumps or awkward sites may need a bigger machine or sectional approach — we confirm equipment and access at the quote visit.

Do you need to remove a tree stump?

You are not obliged to remove a stump after a tree is felled. Some clients are happy to leave it; others want it gone for appearance, safety or because they plan to use the space again.

Common reasons include trip hazards on lawns and paths, an unsightly reminder after tree removal, and freeing ground for paving, planting or building. Stumps can rot down over many months, but living roots may still produce shoots — grinding removes that regrowth risk.

Why choose professional stump grinding?

Stump grinding is one of our most requested follow-on services — often booked with tree removal or on its own for an old stump that has been in the ground for years.

We work with domestic and commercial clients throughout Essex and Suffolk. If you are unsure whether your stump can be ground — size, access, near walls or services — get in touch and we will advise on site.

02 · How it works

The stump grinding process

  1. 01

    Site visit & quote

We measure the stump, check access for the grinder, agree grind depth and note anything underground nearby. Written quote within 48 hours.

  2. 02

    Area prep

The work zone is cleared and protected — fences, beds and surfaces shielded where the machine will track. Utilities and obstructions are discussed before we start.

  3. 03

    Grind to depth

The stump and main surface roots are ground to 300mm below ground level, or the depth agreed on your quote. Wood chip is contained on site during the pass.

  4. 04

    Chip & hand-off

Chip is removed by default or left for you to spread if useful. The hole is ready for topsoil, turf or planting — we will tell you what to expect before we leave.
